Small business with 1-25 employees have a multitude of challenges that are unique to them and not big business.
Jack and Adam had a client, with a young professional hired for a production role. The problem with this employee centered on the example that Jack and Adam use of the 3 Circles. They refer to the three circles and it starts with the products and services area having the right folks on board and on the organizational chart.
The person, which the owner hired for the production role, quickly changed and morphed into a sales role and it just wasn’t working. Then the pipeline for new business started drying up because there was no one in the right role to keep the pipeline thriving. It took nearly a year to pull the trigger on this person. Trying to put the employee in question in a different seat just didn’t work. The owner felt guilty! It was hard to let someone go and be critical with the employee’s performance.
People talk about leadership a lot… leadership is tough at times in dealing with people and having difficult discussions. For a leader, it is tough to admit that you are wrong. You will make mistakes as an owner.
It took this owner nearly one year…and Jack and Adam had to be patient in the coaching process with their client… the small business owner. “We help the owner discover and work through the difficult discussion and role play as to how the conversation should go. … It is different when it is your company and you need to let a person go,” said Adam.
It is rarely a surprise when the person is told that the position they have been assigned is not working on. The employee probably had the sames feeling for a long time.
With Jack and Adam’s client, after the person was let go, the relationship with the employee and the owner was fine and the business started thriving on a path to build its pipeline and work more efficiently.
