On Dirty Secrets of Small Business, Jack Mencini and Adam Sonnhalter, the hosts who are also coaches with Maximum Value Partners, discuss the challenges and frustrations small business owners go through. In this week’s episode, they break apart the myth that when a business owner is giving direction to his or her employee, they really believe that just by explaining the directions once, the team will understand. Unfortunately in hundreds of cases, the employee doesn’t understand and usually says so or tries to bluff their way in attempting to do what they think is the right path to success.
This just leads to frustration on everyone’s part… the business owner is pulling his or her hair out and the employees are thinking that the boss is speaking a different language. How do you solve this dilemma?
Maybe it’s time for the boss to look at his/her communication style and do a little fine tuning. A good idea is to pause and open up the discussion for the team to give you feedback on what they “thought” they heard and the course of action to take. If what they say and the direction you want to go is way off, this will give you the opportunity to make clarification and use it as a teaching moment for both sides.
It just may be that the boss is going a thousand miles an hour and perhaps leaving out some key points because they are already in his head and there is an assumption that the team has the same thought process. (You know what they say about A S S U M E.)
