What to Do When Your Employee Uses the Raise or Walk Ultimatum

December 28, 2016 Adam Sonnhalter

Jack Mencini and Adam Sonnhalter, business coaches for Maximum Value Partners and hosts of the weekly Dirty Secrets of Small Business tackle the dilemma of an employee demanding a raise or leaving?

How does an owner deal with that? The owner ended up changing the structure of the job and giving the employee more responsibilities and the added raise. But, unfortunately that didn’t totally solve the problem for the long term, because the employee ended up leaving 18 months later. And he left for the competing business and lied about it.

How an employee goes about asking for money and then demanding it, is not the type of employee you want to keep around.

You have two choices: to say “no” or say “yes” and then have a plan to get rid of that person in the next 3-6 months. This way, the small business owner has a plan and with eyes wide open knows that this is not a demanding employee he or she will need on their team for the long term.

If you have a success story or a question you would like to share, email or call (radio@maximumvp.com or 877-849-0670). You can also call in during the show each week at noon (EST) – 1:00 pm on WINT 1330 AM, call 440-946-9468 to ask your question to the Maximum Value Partners’ coaches!
